In the 60s and 70s, Soviet censorship cut off the way to the reader for most ideologically unsound texts. In the 1960's literary critics from Michigan — Carl and Ellendea Proffer decided that they must confront this. In the basement of their house they set up the publishing house Ardis, which published Nabokov, Brodsky, Sasha Sokolov and many others.
Our film — through witnesses and participants in the events and, first and foremost, Ellendéa herself — tells the story how a small publishing house made banned voices be heard not only in the West, but also in the Soviet Union itself.
This film is not just a study of the past, but a good case for the present, when in Russia again there is censorship, when dissidents are silenced and it seems like the right time to talk about the existence of Russian culture outside Russia.
